Homepage of PhD candidate in Literature, Evelyn G. Vasquez

I am currently a PhD candidate in the Literature Department at the University of California, San Diego. I have been recently awarded the AAUW Dissertation Fellowship for the 2025-2026 academic year.

I am generally interested in depictions of poor housing as a literary aesthetic that authors and visual artists use to show the effects of forced (dis)placement. I research architectural imagery represented in novels, memoirs, and visual mediums from the mid-19th up to the 20th century. I argue that the relationship between image and text brings together isolated geographies that are drastically different in face value. However, subjects’ home insecurity is vividly connected through the architecture and geography they inhabit.
